Extra Services
Development of mountain areas
Given the significant expansion of construction and road works in Saudi Arabia, especially in Mecca and the holy sites, there is a corresponding need for the reclamation of mountainous areas. Due to the rugged nature of these lands, massive rock-cutting operations are undertaken, which can sometimes be excessive, resulting in the formation of varied rock layers and non-uniform facades. These facades may sometimes be heterogeneous, particularly when high-elevation rock cutting is performed, posing a danger to surrounding structures and the roads overlooking them.
Therefore, it is necessary to find well-studied engineering solutions to ensure that no partial or complete collapses occur over time. These solutions should include support operations tailored to the nature and needs of the rocky areas.
Reinforcement using rock bolts and cement injection
This method involves drilling holes with diameters ranging from (40 mm – 64 mm) and depths not exceeding (12 m). The distance between the holes should be between (1.5 m – 2.5 m), or as determined by the specialized geological engineer. Rock bolts of specified lengths and diameters, as determined by the geological engineer, are then inserted.
The holes are injected with a non-shrink cement grout using a hydraulic pressure injection system. This is done with special machines capable of mixing and pumping the material into the holes, so that the bolts become unified with the rock. To ensure the quality of the work, a tensile test is conducted on a selected group of rock bolts by the geological engineer to ensure their stability and adhesion to the rock face. Each rock bolt must have a tensile strength of no less than 220 KN.
Reinforcement Using Metal Netting
The purpose of this method is to reinforce mountainous areas with irregular rock faces that have large cavities and protruding areas. This is to prevent the fall of rocks that may disintegrate due to erosion, as well as to improve the appearance of rock faces covered with vegetation overlooking valleys.
Execution Method:
1. Install short rock bolts (ranging from 0.5 m to 1 m) with serrated ends on the face to be reinforced.
2. Install high-thickness, high-tension metal netting (roll dimensions 4m × 20m) on the rock face, securing it with the previously installed rock bolts using flanges and fastening nuts.
3. Tie the unfolded netting rolls on the rock face with connecting cables, which range in thickness from 8mm to 12mm, as needed.
Reinforcement using gabion baskets.
This type of reinforcement is used in areas prone to rockfall, especially on slopes and mountainsides. Galvanized iron baskets with a thickness of 3 mm and various sizes are filled with rocks ranging from 15 cm to 40 cm in diameter. The rocks are arranged inside the baskets to fill the gaps between them. These baskets are then stacked side by side and tied together with iron wires to form a single mass along the slope. This structure helps resist the sliding of fallen rocks while allowing rainwater and runoff to pass through.
Reinforcement of earthen slopes using geotextiles.
It is a collection of solid rocks extracted from quarries, typically comprising layers of granite or limestone sedimentary deposits with thickness ranging from 10 cm to 30 cm. These rocks are used as armor for beaches and riverbeds, as abutments for bridges, to prevent water erosion of slopes and soil erosion due to clayey soils. They also serve as building facades for decorative purposes. The rocks are stacked and arranged in overlapping layers, with smaller rocks interlocking with larger ones. Gaps between the rocks are then filled with cement.
Excavation support in construction.
Construction buildings often require excavation at depths necessary for the building’s height, sometimes reaching up to 12 meters. In some cases, reinforcement may be needed in the excavation area, depending on the type of soil—whether rocky or earthy. Here are some methods used for reinforcing these excavations:
1. Reinforcement using anchored concrete walls.
2. Reinforcement using metal struts for collapsed earth areas.
3. Reinforcement using metal struts and reinforced concrete.
4. Reinforcement using metal struts and wooden cribbing.
